Creepy old abandoned mansion on Phoenix Way, Wednesday evening

Pinkie had spent all day -- barring her class, of course -- getting the mansion ready for the Halloween party. If anyone had any protests over her rather liberal use of black and orange balloons, streamers, party hats, table cloths, and confetti, she wasn't hearing them over the noise of her party cannon.

Kitty made a fantastic party helper, at least, helping rearrange what little furniture was already set up (so that's what hands were for!) and doing the many things that even the party cannon couldn't do (such as keep Pinkie from eating all the snacks before the party could even start).

Then, at last, it was time to get into costume. Pinkie had promised to show Kitty just what Nightmare Night was all about, and her Nightmare Moon costume delivered in spades, if she did say so herself. Sure, the glowing contact lenses were uncomfortable, and the black make-up was going to be rather difficult to get out of her coat later, but she was rocking those plastic fangs.

Okay, so, Mike was doing his best to cut down on all extra costs right now, so it made sense to use a costume he already happened to own. No, not one of those costumes, thanks. Another one.

... Oh come on, like there was anyone around that didn't think that dress complimented his shoulders. Or that he had the legs for it (shaved – he was yet to break out of that habit after six years).

He looked utterly comfortable, though that may also have had something to do with the drink in his hand. Also, he may have already had a few before the party had even started. Because the party cannon was a terrifying thing.

The laughing was a good thing, it really was. "Wow. You make a great Marilyn."

Mike put on a coy look and a breathy voice. "Why thank you, Miss Pryde." Then, in his usual manner, he added, "It's actually a leftover from a pre-fourth of July party."

And he'd shown up at someone's house at seven in the morning in it. This was preferable.

"I'm glad it hasn't lost its charm."

"It hasn't! And I didn't know people dressed up as Marilyn before the Fourth of July," Kitty said.

"Oh, it's not really a... a widespread thing," Mike said. "Or, you know, a real thing at all. I just used to hang out with people who liked to have dress-up parties."

Also, pre-Fourth of July parties. Or just any party at all.

"Aaand now you're going to be stuck throwing one at some point," Kitty just decided.

Mike laughed and nodded because really, that was no hardship at all. "I'm sure that can be arranged," he said. "I do like a good party, and don't need much of an excuse for one, either."

"Is it weird that I still think you look hot even though I've totally been all dude all the time since I was like, twenty-four?" Laurie greeted him. "It's Hot Bartender under that wig, right?"

Laurie liked calling people by their identifiers, okay?

"Sure, I'll accept that," Mike grinned from underneath his fabulous wig. Which was on firmly enough that he could toss his hair girlishly without losing it.

Then he gave her outfit a proper look – and a low whistle. "Well, there goes my childhood."

"That's okay," Laurie assured him. "You were done with it anyway. And besides, you've ruined bottle blondes for me, so we're even."

"I humbly apologize." He didn't look humble at all. "But it's good that we're even. And welcome to my amazing abode, I should probably be a good hostess and say that, right?"

Even if technically this was Kitty and Pinkie's party.

Laurie worked in real estate, okay? She was professionally horrified.

"Uh, yeah." He looked just an eensy bit sheepish about it. "I swear I didn't know it was going to be... like this."

"It's nice," Laurie said, eyes widening as she tried to put a positive spin on things. "I mean, it's a real...fixer-upper. You look handy." She'd noticed the shoulders. She'd noticed a lot, okay? "I'm sure you've got plans to improve it, right? 'Cause I work in real estate and...okay, I've totally seen worse."

"Yeah, we're working on it," Mike nodded. "We're definitely working on it. And I've worked in construction, I know my way around houses. It's... a work in progress, but I'm optimistic."

"You should be," Laurie decided, based on nothing. But at least now she had a reason to take interest other than hot shoulders. "So, wait, you do construction? Would you be at all interested in picking up any work on the side in that direction? I manage apartments, and...it'd be nice to have some contacts who know what drywall is."

She barely did. She learned that word from Jules.

"You look so pretty!" Pinkie loved the wig especially. Humans didn't have nearly the same kind of lovely mane as ponies did.

And Mike had had enough to drink that even the last of the urge to flail about the fact that a talking pony had used a cannon to get his house ready for a party.

His smile actually looked pretty genuine.

"Thank you," he said, tossing his hair back. "Nice job decorating the place, by the way."

"Well, for once it's pretty appropriate." Not so much when you were living there usually. "Once in a lifetime chance."

Because if he was still here in a year, he sure as hell hoped the house wouldn't look like this.

Pinkie looked shifty, then leaned in to whisper really loudly at him. "I'm kinda hoping you'll help fix that," she said. "Derek's not really good at housekeeping."

Mike laughed despite himself. "Yeah, that's the plan. I got my furniture coming in soon, we're gonna splash some paint here and there, it's gonna be fine."

Though she would possibly paint her own face smiling at a happy sun if she was given the chance.
