Pinkie had spent all day -- barring her class, of course -- getting the mansion ready for the Halloween party. If anyone had any protests over her rather liberal use of black and orange balloons, streamers, party hats, table cloths, and confetti, she wasn't hearing them over the noise of her party cannon.

Kitty made a fantastic party helper, at least, helping rearrange what little furniture was already set up (so that's what hands were for!) and doing the many things that even the party cannon couldn't do (such as keep Pinkie from eating all the snacks before the party could even start).

Then, at last, it was time to get into costume. Pinkie had promised to show Kitty just what Nightmare Night was all about, and her Nightmare Moon costume delivered in spades, if she did say so herself. Sure, the glowing contact lenses were uncomfortable, and the black make-up was going to be rather difficult to get out of her coat later, but she was rocking those plastic fangs.

"Uh, yeah." He looked just an eensy bit sheepish about it. "I swear I didn't know it was going to be... like this."

"It's nice," Laurie said, eyes widening as she tried to put a positive spin on things. "I mean, it's a real...fixer-upper. You look handy." She'd noticed the shoulders. She'd noticed a lot, okay? "I'm sure you've got plans to improve it, right? 'Cause I work in real estate and...okay, I've totally seen worse."

"Yeah, we're working on it," Mike nodded. "We're definitely working on it. And I've worked in construction, I know my way around houses. It's... a work in progress, but I'm optimistic."

"You should be," Laurie decided, based on nothing. But at least now she had a reason to take interest other than hot shoulders. "So, wait, you do construction? Would you be at all interested in picking up any work on the side in that direction? I manage apartments, and...it'd be nice to have some contacts who know what drywall is."

She barely did. She learned that word from Jules.

Mike nodded again. "Oh, definitely. I only just work the one night at the bar, anyway, and I'm used to working a bunch of jobs at once. I definitely know what drywall is, plus I can really use any extra money I can get."

Because look at his house.

"Yeah, so color me very interested."

"What other kinds of jobs are you used to having?" Laurie asked, arching a brow as she pulled out her phone and held it out. "'Cause I can do like a whole bunch of nothing as far as this stuff. Number, please, so I can text you with any drywall emergencies?"

And also, you know, so she could have it. Laurie was crafty.

So crafty. Mike rattled off his number easily enough. Hey, he didn't mind her having it, professionally or otherwise.

"Oh you know," he said, in reply to her other question, "mobile detailing, random handiwork, managing small businesses..."

"Small business management?" she asked, latching onto that. "You're an entrepreneur, huh?" The rather grandiose way she said that may have indicated that she thought it was a pretty fancy thing to have on your resume. "How'd you end up here, instead of off...entrepreneuring?"

Mike didn't think it was that fancy a thing, not when you were faced with teh reality of being entrepreneurial. But the word was nice!

"Well, I guess I just needed a change of scenery." Which was a nice way of saying his dreams had blown up in his face, because that wasn't really party talk. "Good thing about entrepreneuring is that in some cases you can take it elsewhere pretty easily. So I'm... broadening my horizons."

"And bartending," Laurie noted, "which is like, one of the top five professions ever. It's like, right up there with puppy trainer and ice cream tester."

"I wouldn't know, I haven't tried those other things," Mike replied, amused – and refraining from making werewolf-related cracks. "I don't know, ice cream testing actually sounds better than bartending to me."

"Yeah but you can test booze," Laurie pointed out. "Did you know there's a type of vodka that tastes like Froot Loops? I barely even taste alcohol anymore and I still want to try it!"

Good impression you're making here, Keller.

Well, Mike had heard worse. But you also had to consider the kinds of people he'd hung out with in the past. His standards were skewed. "I did not know that," he said. "But it sounds fun. Maybe a little too breakfast-like for my taste in booze but probably worth a try."

Yeah, those were Laurie's people. Pretty much still. No 'past' about it, really. "There's one that tastes like Tang, too, but that one's a little too close to my classless upbringing," she added cheerfully. "But see? Bartending is a totally awesome profession. Way better than real estate-ing, at least as far as day-to-day goes."

"I dunno, I don't get a lot of tips due to my charm and good looks, like I'm sure you do," Laurie pointed out. "It's not cool to tip your property manager I guess. Lame."

"What, people don't do that?" He knew people didn't do that. "I would totally tip you if you were my property manager, I'm just saying."

Because he could say shit like that, because she wasn't.

"Well, obviously you should be living in my building," Laurie decided, "or at least educate those who are. I didn't move here from Gulfhaven to not make changes!"

Because apparently she was taking a stand now, or something.

Mostly, it was coming off as adorable. Mike wasn't sure that was the intended effect.

"And where is Gulfhaven, that so inspires the need for change here?"

"Florida," she said, a little wistfully. "Just outside Sarasota. It's still warm enough there to be getting Halloween-drunk outside."

Which was not always preferrable. More things to fall over.

Okay, that was enough to get Mike raising his eyebrows below that fantastic wig of his. "Florida? Really? I just moved up from Tampa."

And yes, he was questioning both their judgments when it came to the climate

"Seriously?" Laurie was absolutely delighted by this news. "Oh man, I love Tampa! It's so much fun! Like Orlando, but for people over ten....who don't really care about rollercoasters. And like drinking. And the beach."

Congrats, Laurie. You just described most of Florida.

"Seriously, you moved from Tampa to...here?" Maybe a little judging, yes.

Mike held up his hands. "I plead temporary insanity," he joked. "And maybe ignorance of climate."
